Laughtons Hardware, a long-standing establishment in Sea Point, has closed its doors; however continues (at time of publication) to trade online. A new supermarket is set to replace the hardware store on Main Road.
The development application notice reveals that the erven at 291, 293, 295, and 299 Main Road (erf numbers 428, 429, 1323, and 437) will be consolidated to accommodate the new supermarket. The proposed plans, submitted by Tommy Brummer Town Planners, indicate that the existing building has a floor space of 1970 square meters and includes an on-street loading bay.
In a statement to the Atlantic Sun, the town planner explained, “Our application was made to consolidate the properties, cede a portion of road reserve to the City and to obtain a departure for the loading requirements as no on-site parking is available for the business operations. The application for consolidation was made as the existing operations straddle four property boundaries which would not allow for any future tenants to make use of the entire building as Laughtons currently does,”
The Sea Point Fresnaye Bantry Bay Ratepayers’ and Residents’ Association (SFB) has reviewed the documentation outlining the scope of the development.
“What is being proposed is relatively modest and low-impact, and we therefore decided not to object to the consolidation proposal. We will, of course, be concerned that the development is implemented as per the proposals and will be vigilant to ensure that this is the case.”
– Gordon Metz, Deputy Chair and Head of the Planning Committee at the SFB
The SFB emphasizes its commitment to monitoring the development process to ensure it adheres to the proposed plans and maintains the integrity and character of the Sea Point area. The association will continue to engage with the City of Cape Town and the developers to safeguard the interests of the community.
