The Sea Point, Fresnaye & Bantry Bay Ratepayers & Residents Association (SFB) is deeply saddened to announce the tragic death of a 17-year-old cyclist, Calib de Kock, from Bonteheuwel. The incident occurred in Sea Point on Tuesday morning, 11 June 2024, and has left the community in shock.
Calib, a dedicated member of the Phoenix Cycling Club, was out for a training ride when the accident happened. According to reports, a car door was opened suddenly, causing Calib to collide with it. Despite being rushed to Christiaan Barnard Hospital, he succumbed to his injuries.
Tributes have been pouring in for Calib, highlighting his passion for cycling and his vibrant spirit. Sea Point ward councillor Nicola Jowell expressed her heartfelt condolences to Calib’s family, friends, and teammates, describing the incident as “a tragic accident that will be devastating for his family and so many affected by this.”
Jowell also made a heartfelt plea to all road users to exercise extreme caution, especially around cyclists. “Cyclists are one of the most vulnerable road users. We need to please be extra cautious on the roads and take a moment to check and check again before opening a door, changing a lane, making a turn,” she urged.
She also extended her thoughts to the driver involved in the accident, acknowledging the profound impact this incident will have on them. “My thoughts are also with the driver of the vehicle who would do anything to get that split second back and will also be devastated by this incident,” Jowell said.
The SFB urges all community members to heed this reminder and to be particularly vigilant in ensuring the safety of all road users. Our thoughts and prayers are with Calib’s loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
